Ever since I can remember I have loved to draw with paper and pen. I would always have my mom bring a notepad and a pen to whatever.   I have always loved drawing things in nature and using lots of detail.  I also was able to draw things well using a very limited number of lines on the paper.  M.C. Escher is one of my biggest inspirations because his drawings were simply incredible. His drawing Waterfall is my favorite of his works because he can take such advantage of just a simple flat, white surface. His detail in his works is just unbelievable. I want to take his detail in his works and put it into mine.  Animals are my passion when it comes to art. I don’t think that they will be 100% perfect when it comes to being lifelike but I want them to still be accurate. This is my last year of high school art class; I want make this last art project count and be something that is meaningful to me.
I want to do pen and ink drawings of animals and landscapes.  I have always had a passion for drawing animals and I love the outdoors.  I love to use great details and cross-hatching with a pen to add contrast.  I would have to say that my inspiration would be Bill Peet because he was so good at drawing animals and landscapes in his books.  Bev Doolittle’s attentiveness to detail and contrast in the animals she paints is just phenomenal.  I want to focus on reptiles and amphibians because they have such intricate designs on their skin and scales. Detailed scales and eyes of these animals is really what I want to focus on in my pieces. Up close detail to the eyes and scales is what I’m going to focus on, like they are popping off the paper. My medium is going to be black pens on colored paper. For maybe a tree frog, I would use a bright, lime green type paper. If I were to draw a yellow pit viper, I would use a bright yellow paper to really bring out the high contrast.  I love bright colors and a very dark contrasting color. The bright color will be the paper and the drawing itself will be black. I want to do several pieces of several different animals. One gigantic project doesn’t interest me. I want to do at least three pieces that will go together well. There still needs to be a decent amount of blank space to evenly balance the art piece and have good angles at the animal. The pieces are not going to be very big because of the amount of detail going into each piece. I think that smaller pieces around the size of a normal sheet of paper would really look good with lots of detail on them. Pieces that are too large will be overwhelming. That is what I want to do for my Mini Concentration Project.
